Word Play

Sometimes I hear freedom of speech
and think about the freedom of words.
The freedom to have a way of your own.
Some words sound the same
but have different meanings.

We can wait for something to change
while feeling like the weight of the world
is on our shoulders.
Or being waited on by a server
in a restaurant without having
to carry burden ourselves.

Words are filled with options
that can lead us down an unseen path.
We can go left instead of going right.
All while vowing to never return from
that which we left behind.

Words can provide comfort or pain—
depending on our diction
and [hidden] intent.

Talking is not the same as conversation
because every other day words find
new meaning in the dictionary.

Some words are worn like
a badge of honor, yet
depending on who speaks them,
those same words can be used
to dishonor.

Words can hit like a brick wall.
Words can be gentle enough to
soften that blow.
Words have meaning.
Words have power.
Or words can mean
nothing at all.

Whichever you believe is more true,
we must choose our words wisely
or be stuck with the consequences
of using them foolishly.
