Shoestrings

Sometimes we take
life’s simplicity’s for granted.
Sometimes it’s life itself
that we take for granted.
Sometimes we go throughout the day
without appreciating what we have until
someone else’s misfortune reminds us
that at any moment we could be
in those same shoes.
Tripping over our own feet because
the shoestrings that held us together
are now untied and dragging along
as we step on them one foot after the other.
Sometimes we realize that we are the ones
capable of helping them tie those shoestrings
—but are we willing to?
Sometimes we realize the shoes themselves
are only holding on by the thread of
distant hopes and unfulfilled dreams
—so tying those shoestrings would only be
a temporary fix.
Sometimes we need to look through
our closets of unfinished projects
and incomplete plans.
Finding the boxes of once worn and
unworn shoes of our own.
Sometimes we must let go of
what we’ve been holding on to
—to help someone else.

This is a really beautifully written poem—it’s certainly got me thinking about my own “laces” in life. Thanks for this!
