Friend

I wasn’t always kind to you.
I didn’t always pay attention to you.
I took you for granted
even when everyone else around you
lifted you up.

I lifted them up.
In fact, I put everyone else first
and put you last.
Not realizing that I needed to be
a friend to you first.

Not realizing that without you
I’m pretending to be
someone I am not.
I must be a friend to myself.
I understand that now.
